Abstract:
This seminar centers on a research project about visual culture and pedagogical approaches designed to contribute to the in-service training of visual arts teachers in Turkey. The project was carried out with support of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey [TÜBİTAK], and took place over a seven-month period, in seven different cities, in the form of 3-day workshops. This research consisted of activities that advanced critical thinking skills of classroom and art teachers by raising awareness about the impacts of global visual culture through both theoretical perspectives and artistic applications. The aim was to advocate for teachers to open discussion about visual experiences and visual culture images in daily life through a variety of strategies in the classroom. Workshop themes included: 1) How do we create meaning; 2) Ways of looking; 3) Ideologies of Space; 4) Inter-semiotic Exchange; and 5) Seduction and representation: Visual culture and technology-based museum experience. Participants in this seminar will have the opportunity to explore the pedagogical approaches and outcomes of this project.
