Drs. Kerry Renwick and Shannon Leddy are pleased to announce the launch of a second arts-based public pedagogy project in the Faculty of Education. Inspired by Jaime Black’s Red Dress Project, they would like to contribute to her purpose in raising awareness of the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls on this continent. According to the Native Women’s Association of Canada more than 4000 Indigenous women and girls have been murdered or gone missing since 1980.
We have chosen February 14th to announce this project as this date has for the last number of years been closely associated with the MMWIG marches that take place in cities across the country. But, as with Orange Sweater Day each September 30th, for those who experience trauma and loss, the ramifications must be carried every day.
Faculty, Staff and Students in the Faculty of Education are invited to contribute to a collective art work that will be installed in the South stairwell of the Scarfe Building. The final work will be an assemblage of tiny red dresses and red earrings, representing the women and girls who have been lost. Contributions may be crocheted, knitted, sewn or beaded. We encourage you to share this invitation in your schools as communities as well to maximize its reach.
Whatever your technique or design your pieces should fit into a square no smaller than 8 x 8cm (or about 3 3/16 x 3 3/16 inches) and no bigger than 17 x 17cm (or 6 11/16 x 6 11/16 inches).
Contributions
- Contributions can be sent by mail to Dr. Shannon Leddy and Dr. Kerry Renwick, or may be dropped off at the EDCP office.
- Contributions made before June 1st, 2024 will be guaranteed to be part of the installation on June 21st, 2024. Those received after this date will be reserved for subsequent installations.
