From Glaciers and Climate Change to Communication: Using Scientific Data in Public Engagement Projects

Abstract:

How can glacier data inspire action? This talk presents projects that turn glacier science into emotional, immersive experiences, from VR hikes to AI reconstructions, and explores how storytelling across disciplines can connect people with climate change in meaningful ways.

Glaciers are powerful symbols of climate change, but how can data about their retreat be used to move people to care and act? In this talk, a series of science communication projects is presented that translate glacier science into emotional, immersive experiences. Examples ranging from virtual glacier hikes and museum installations to AI-driven reconstructions that are used to explore how interdisciplinary storytelling can transform facts into meaning, bridge science and art, and create tangible connections to the landscapes we live in and the planet we seek to protect.

Short Bio:

Dr. Andreas Linsbauer is a glaciologist, senior scientist, and teacher trainer at the University of Zurich (UZH), where he leads the Climate and Glacier Change in Communication” research group within the Department of Geography.

His research focuses on understanding and communicating the impacts of climate change on glaciers and mountain environments. He employs a combination of field measurements, climate modeling, and innovative science communication strategies to engage both the public and policymakers.

Additionally, Dr. Linsbauer contributes to the Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (GLAMOS), providing valuable data on glacier mass balances and volumes. Dr. Linsbauer is also a Senior Researcher, Department of Geosciences, University of Fribourg.

Dr. Linsbauer began his career as a primary and secondary school teacher before transitioning to glaciology research and leading interdisciplinary projects in science communication. The common thread throughout his work is a passion for bridging education and environmental science. His goal is to communicate abstract concepts – such as the 2°C target for global warming agreed upon at the Paris Climate Conference – in ways that are effective and accessible to diverse audiences.

Since 2025, Dr. Linsbauer has been a member of the board of trustees of the Glacier Garden Lucerne, a unique cultural and scientific institution offering immersive experiences of Earth’s geological and climate history since 1873. He contributes his scientific expertise and mediation skills to the ongoing development of the museum’s long-term vision.
