Faculty Spotlight: Patricia O’Riley

Pat’s scholarship focuses on the intersections of technology, social justice, ecojustice, ecoliteracy, Indigeneity and globalization. Her research and teaching are informed by feminist, critical, poststructural and Indigenous theory, experience as one of the few women with a PhD in Technology Education (formerly Industrial Education), and 20 years of workplace experience in building design and construction, human rights, labour relations, and occupational health and safety. Pat works with a broad understanding of “technology” including digital, ecological, Indigenous, textile, industrial, arts and crafts, and language. Her current research focus is on the regeneration of Indigenous ecotechnological knowings in Canada and Peru toward a more equitable, just and ecologically sustainable world.

Pat has taught at universities in Canada, USA, and New Zealand. Her position before coming to EDCP was Associate Professor, Dept. of Equity Studies, York University. Pat is the Co-Advisor of the MEd specialization in Ecojustice & Sustainability Education, and Co-Director of the Peru Summer Institute: Ecology, Technology & Indigeneity in the High Amazon (2103, 2015). She is the author of Technology, Culture and Socioeconomics: A Rhizoanalysis of Educational Discourses (Peter Lang, 2003), and Co-Editor of Speaking for Ourselves: Environmental Justice in Canada (UBC Press, 2010).
