Dustin Garnet is an Associate Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy. Prior to his position at UBC, Dustin was a specialised high school art instructor, community art educator, and an Assistant Professor of Art Education at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA). He attended the University of Toronto to earn his HBA and teaching credentials at OISE. His graduate work began at York University, where he earned his MEd in Curriculum studies focusing on art education. Dustin’s SSHRC-funded doctoral work earned the 2016 Elliot Eisner Doctoral Research Award in Art Education (National Art Education Association), the 2016 Doctoral Research Award in Art Education (Canadian Society for Education through Art), and was the Runner-up/Finalist for the 2016 Arts-based Dissertation Award, ABER SIG (American Educational Research Association). He was also recognised as the 2015 Valedictorian at Concordia University.
Dustin presents and publishes both nationally and internationally on research that intersects historical methods, cultural studies, international and marginalized histories, material culture, and EDID issues. His recent publications include the co-edited book Living Histories: Global Conversations in Art Education (2022) and the guest-edited special issue Inflection Points in/through Art Education: Conversations Today and a Look to the Future (2022), published in the journal Visual Inquiry.
Service is foundational to Dustin’s scholarship. He serves on the editorial board for the International Journal of Education through Art (IJETA) and as a manuscript reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed journals both nationally and internationally. Dustin was the President of the California Art Education Association and the creator of the NAEA History and Historiography in Art Education interest group (HHAE). In his role as Assistant Professor of Art Education at CSULA, he developed and coordinated the Community Teaching Artist Certificate program (CTA) in collaboration with the College of Professional and Global Education and the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Currently, Dustin is the Pacific Region Director of the Higher Education Division for the National Art Education Association and Co-Chair of HHAE.
