Fourth Math and Science Family Day

On behalf of an EDCP Outreach Committee and EDCP Science Group I would like to let you know that we had a fantastic Fourth Math and Science Family Day on Saturday, November 1st. The event was hosted by the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy and supported by the Department, TEO, Dean’s Office, Beaty Biodiversity Museum and Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences. We had more than 400 guests and more than 80 volunteers. The event lasted for almost three hours and it was not easy for us to ask the guests to leave as people were very engaged.

We had five rooms filled with people all the time, people in the hallways and all over the place. As one of the guests told me, it was like a traveling Science World event – but much cooler. It was fun to see entire families – young kids, teens, parents, and grandparents engaged with science and math at such a level.

It was also very inspirational to see our TCs volunteering at various stations and feeling happy and proud to lead math and science events. We had lots of elementary and secondary TCs and all of them got many great ideas about math and science teaching as a result. I am sure I missed many people but I wanted to share with you how grateful I am for all this support. Math and science outreach means a lot to me and I am so glad we have established our own fall tradition now! I am proud that thanks to the events like this one PEOPLE outside of UBC FoE and outside of UBC get to KNOW ABOUT our Department and about our Faculty and we are building our math and science outreach reputation.
